Every other venue on this list is a lodge, a resort or the odd museum. The Utah State Capitol is a marble government building with a copper dome, granite pillars and a grand staircase couples get married on instead of walking down.
Almost all of it happens indoors and it books year-round, so weather stops being something you plan around. 7 of the Capitol’s event spaces are open to weddings, from the rotunda under the dome to an 1881 chapel on the same grounds. Here’s what each one holds, what it costs, and what to sort out before you book.
Utah State Capitol Wedding Quick Facts
Location — The Utah State Capitol is at 350 North State Street in Salt Lake City, at the top of the hill above downtown and about 10 minutes from the airport.
Capacity — The Rotunda holds up to 500 guests for a seated ceremony, 320 for a seated dinner, and up to 900 for a flowing reception with no fixed seating. The White Memorial Chapel seats 160, or 58 at tables. The East and West Plazas have been listed at 1,000 guests each.
Cost — Renting the Rotunda at the Utah State Capitol runs $2,200 a day Monday through Thursday and $2,500 Friday through Sunday, the East and West Plazas are $1,500 each, and the White Memorial Chapel is $1,000. Rental covers the space only, so tables and chairs are a separate line.
Season — Weddings happen at the Utah State Capitol year-round, and most of the wedding-eligible space is indoors, so a February date is as workable as a June one.
Catering — Food has to come from the Capitol’s approved caterer list, outside and family catering aren’t allowed, and alcohol isn’t permitted anywhere on Capitol Hill.
Lodging — There are no guest rooms at the Utah State Capitol, but it sits at the top of downtown Salt Lake City, a short drive from dozens of hotels.
Coordinator — Capitol staff help with setup and breakdown, but there’s no in-house wedding coordinator at the Utah State Capitol, so plan on hiring your own planner or day-of coordinator.
Accessibility — The Utah State Capitol has been described as ADA accessible. Specifics on ramps, elevators and accessible restrooms aren’t published, so confirm what your guests need directly with the Capitol Preservation Board.
Curfew — Every event at the Utah State Capitol, reception included, has to be finished by 11 p.m.
Pets — Pets aren’t allowed on Capitol grounds without written permission from the executive director of the Capitol Preservation Board, so a dog in the ceremony is a conversation to have early.
Utah State Capitol Wedding Info
The building is the reason to book it: granite pillars, lion sculptures and a copper dome outside, a marble rotunda and hand-painted ceilings inside. It was designed by Richard K.A. Kletting, built between 1912 and 1916, and restored between 2004 and 2008. A new North Capitol Building opened on the grounds on January 16, 2026, adding two more bookable spaces and over 315 parking stalls.
There are 15 event spaces in the complex, and 7 of them are open to weddings: the Rotunda, the Hall of Governors, the East and West Plazas, the North and South Conference Centers, and the White Memorial Chapel.
Ceremony Sites at Utah State Capitol
Most ceremonies happen on the Rotunda’s grand staircase, where the two of you come down opposite sides and meet on the main stairs under the dome, flanked by the large gold and glass light fixtures.
The White Memorial Chapel is a separate 1881 building on the same grounds. It started as an LDS meetinghouse downtown, was dismantled, and was rebuilt on Capitol Hill in 1976. It’s nondenominational now, seats 160 for a ceremony or 58 at tables, and it’s the option for couples who want a smaller church-shaped ceremony rather than the Rotunda.
The East and West Plazas work as outdoor ceremony sites, though neither has running water or kitchen access.
Reception Spaces at Utah State Capitol
The Rotunda doubles as a reception space, with tables and chairs around the perimeter of the dome and a dance floor in the center. Seated, it holds 320 for dinner; opened up for a flowing reception with no fixed seating, it holds up to 900.
The Hall of Governors holds up to 500 seated guests, or 300 seated at tables.
The North and South Conference Centers came with the North Capitol Building in January 2026. The North holds 200 seated or 130 at tables, the South holds 165 seated or 200 at tables, and the two can be opened into one larger room. The South Conference Center is the only reception space here with its own green room and catering kitchen attached.
One wedding is held in each event space per day, so the room you book is yours for the day even when something else is running elsewhere in the complex. Confirm that’s still the case for your date.
Getting Ready, Lodging & Guest Logistics
There’s a room available for final touches before the ceremony, but plan on doing the bulk of hair, makeup and getting-ready photos off site. Ask what’s currently set aside for wedding parties when you book.
There’s no guest lodging at the Capitol, and downtown Salt Lake City hotels are a short drive down the hill.
Guest parking is in the public lots on the east and northeast sides of the complex, in the new underground parking near the North Capitol Building, and on nearby streets where the signs allow it. 2 wheelchairs are available through the visitor services office.
The grounds themselves are the closest thing to a portrait location, including the cherry trees that blossom in spring, and Memory Grove sits in the canyon just below the hill.
Catering & Vendors at Utah State Capitol
Food and drink come from the Capitol’s approved caterer list. Outside catering isn’t permitted and neither is family or friend catering, so the list is where your menu starts. The approved caterers cover a wide range, from Utah standbys like Cafe Rio and Red Iguana to Brazilian, Venezuelan and Hawaiian-style menus, and there’s ice cream catering on the list.
Alcohol isn’t allowed anywhere on Capitol Hill. For a lot of couples that’s the fact that decides this venue one way or the other, so know it before you tour.
Balloons, confetti, rose petals, rice, birdseed, open-flame candles and pyrotechnics are all off the table. Plan your exit and your centerpieces around that.
Utah State Capitol Wedding Cost
Rental covers the space only, and tables and chairs are priced separately. The Rotunda is $2,200 a day Monday through Thursday and $2,500 Friday through Sunday. The Hall of Governors is $1,500 a day, and so are the East and West Plazas.
The White Memorial Chapel is $1,000 a day. A shorter 3-hour or rehearsal booking there is listed at $250 on the fee schedule and $400 on the chapel’s own page, so ask which one applies to your date.
The North and South Conference Centers, and the two combined, are priced by the hour at $200 to $400. Those rates sit under the fee schedule’s nonprofit and government tier and no general-public rate is published alongside them, so a private wedding may be quoted differently.
Beyond the space, there’s a one-time $10 non-refundable application fee and a refundable security deposit, which isn’t published as an amount. Holding a date takes a 50% deposit against the rental fee. Event insurance is required at $1 million per occurrence and $2 million aggregate.
Utah Highway Patrol security is required for larger public events at $80 per officer per hour, and the Capitol charges separately for staff time, setup and breakdown help and janitorial, none of which are published as rates. Reserved event parking is $7 per stall per day.
Cancelling gets a full refund with at least 30 days’ notice under the Capitol’s own administrative rule, while its event-fees page asks for 90. Get the number that applies to your booking in writing before you sign anything.
What to Know Before You Book Utah State Capitol
The Capitol looks good no matter the time of day, and it feels regal because of all the marble and the clean lines. On a list of Utah wedding venues that runs heavily to lodges, with the odd museum in it, this is the one that looks like nothing else on the list. And you don’t have to worry about the weather variables.
